PKG extractor

pkgextractor unpacks the debug FPKG layouts observed in development: the outer package, inner PFS, NAPS name maps and Kraken-compressed payloads. Encrypted retail packages are out of scope.

Repository notes through October 10, 2026

What a debug package contains

A PlayStation 5 package wraps a file system. The debug layouts PS5PCEM has observed use an outer package, an inner PFS image, a NAPS table that maps package names to files, and payloads compressed with Kraken. The extractor walks those layers and writes the files out. It ships beside the launcher as pkgextractor.exe, and the launcher has an Extract PKG button that drives it.

The October 2 development extractor fixes InvalidPfs for Grand Theft Auto III: The Definitive Edition, PPSA03527 version 1.007. All 48 files extract, including eboot.bin, six modules and both PAK archives, and both PAK index checksums match. Twenty-one package tests pass. That report did not launch the game. Extraction and execution are separate claims.

Retail encryption

Encrypted retail packages are not supported. No keys are included or implied. A package the observed debug parser does not recognise fails the parse. It is not partially extracted into a directory that looks complete.

The legal boundary matches the rest of the project. The tool exists so a person who already has a dump they are entitled to use can feed the loader. The site and the emulator do not distribute games, firmware or keys.

After extraction

The loader reads the decrypted eboot.bin and mounts the content directory as /app0. A typical layout keeps eboot.bin in the package root or in a decrypted subdirectory. The launcher looks in both. Savedata is not inside the package. It lives under the emulator home, keyed by title ID.

Kraken, NAPS and PFS here are package-file mechanisms. They are not the GPU swizzle, the AMPR engine, or the audio codecs, which are easy to confuse with them because those also compress or remap data.

What is implemented

  • Observed debug FPKG layouts, inner PFS, NAPS name maps and Kraken payloads.
  • A command-line extractor and a launcher button.
  • The GTA III development extraction: 48 files and matching PAK index checksums.
  • Twenty-one package tests passing on that extractor.

What is still missing

  • Encrypted retail packages are not supported, and no keys ship with the tool.
  • An unrecognised layout fails. It is not emitted as a partial tree.
  • A successful extract is not a statement that the title then runs.

What these pages are

The text follows the architecture notes and the October 2026 reports in the PS5PCEM repository. A focused test passing is not a new frame rate and not a new playthrough.
